Is SCRO Review Required?

Research that involves the use of human stem cells, human embryos, or their derivatives must be reviewed and approved by the Stem Cell Research Oversight Panel (SCRO) prior to activity commencement. For information on whether your research requires SCRO review, please consult the flow chart below (click on image to download as pdf).

Information on Protocols

In order to obtain approval for your activities, you will need to complete and submit an electronic protocol application form, detailing your intended use of stem cells. In general, protocol applications that require full SCRO review and are received by the first working day of the month will be reviewed at the SCRO Panel meeting on the second Tuesday of the following month. The SCRO Panel meets the second Tuesday of every month. The name of Stanford's electronic protocol system is eProtocol Stem Cells.

Protocol Review
Protocols are reviewed by the SCRO staff and SCRO Members. Comments and questions are sent to the Protocol Director to be addressed prior to a convened meeting. All Regular protocols that require Full Panel Review must be presented, discussed and voted on at a convened SCRO meeting. This process generally takes approximately 4-6 weeks. For review type identification, please consult the flow chart above.

Under no circumstances may research begin until the Protocol Director has been notified of SCRO approval of a protocol. Approval may be confirmed by email, phone, Interdepartmental Campus Mail (I.D.), or U.S. Mail.
